Pixley Wildlife Refuge

This preserve consists of 6,833 acres of valley grassland and wetland habitats, managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. It is home to a small marsh and is the best place in the southern San Joaquin Valley to view wintering Sandhill Cranes. A trail sign at the refuge has a map outlining the refuge boundaries, a     mile walking trail ending at a observation platform and various habitats. It is open 365 days a year from dawn to dusk.

To get there: From Visalia, drive south on Hwy 99. At Earlimart, turn right on Ave. 56 (Sierra Ave). Drive west 5.7 miles. Take RD 88 north for approximately 1 mile until you cross a small ditch (Deer Creek). On the left there is a break in the fence where you will find a gravel parking area. The trailhead and maps are available here.
